The odds of an asteroid striking a city on Earth are higher than previously thought. Between 2000 and 2013, monitoring systems detected 26 asteroids exploding in Earth's atmosphere with the force of a nuclear weapon. While most of the detonations took place at altitudes too high to cause damage on the ground, the residents of Chelyabinsk, Russia, know all too well the danger posed by these events. Just over a year ago, one such explosion caused injuries to more than 1,000 people there. Experts estimate that an asteroid capable of destroying a city strikes our planet about once every 100...
For the first time, researchers have successfully created stem cells from the skin cells of adults. This is considered the first step in developing patient-specific cells lines to treat diseases like heart failure, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and vision loss, but it is also the first step in human reproductive cloning, an issue fraught with ethical dilemmas. To create the stem cells, researchers fused a grown skin cell with an ovum whose DNA had been removed. The resulting embryo contains an inner lining of pluripotent stem cells. Of 39 attempts to create stem cells from adult cells, the researchers succeeded only...
Yet another study, this one the first to look at the effects of childhood bullying in late adulthood, is adding to the growing body of evidence on the persistent and pervasive social, physical, and psychological effects of bullying. At age 50, people who were frequent victims of childhood bullying remained at increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. They also tended to report a lower quality of life. The findings suggest that we never really outgrow the trauma of bullying but instead carry it with us throughout our lives.

Scientists have found a sister planet to this big, floaty rock we all live on, and it's about 500 light years away. The planet is the size of Earth, and it's orbiting a star in what NASA is calling a "habitable zone"—a distance where water could be on the planet's surface in a liquid state. "We know of just one planet where life exists—Earth," said Elisa Quintana, a NASA researcher. "Finding a ...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a 49-year-old West Virginia man has been indicted on charges he threatened to kill U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin.
New York (AFP) - US stocks were mixed in early trade Thursday following a good report on US durable goods and strong earnings from Apple and some other big companies.
The changes would also apply to other, previously unregulated tobacco products, including cigars, hookahs, nicotine gels, and pipe tobacco, and are aimed in large part at keeping these substances away from young people. "This proposed rule is the latest step in our efforts to make the next generation tobacco-free," said...
New York (AFP) - Apple's shareholder-friendly measures including a stock split and an expanded buyback helped lead US shares higher in opening trade Thursday.
Slavyansk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Ukraine's military launched assaults to retake rebel-held eastern towns on Thursday in which up to five people were reported killed, a move Russian President Vladimir Putin warned would have "consequences". The offensive sent international tensions soaring and oil prices up, raising the prospect of Russia making...

CHARLESTON- In his 2014 State of the Union Address President Obama asked businesses across the country to "Give America a Raise".  Eager to prove that government is best used as a blunt weapon, the WV Legislature quickly removed that choice from businesses and quickly voted to raise the state minimum…
BREAKING NEWS- Forget about traces of Formaldehyde, and the worst of 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol which is all but a smelly memory (in most areas).  This morning West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin issued a statement that people in all 55 counties are being exposed to another nasty chemical compound.  This time, in the form…
