With the Ebola outbreak in West Africa still uncontained, the UN is increasing its calls for funding in the fight against the epidemic from $100 million just a month ago to $1 billion today. The Chinese sturgeon, considered a "living fossil" due to its 140-million-year history, may not be around for much longer. It is teetering on the brink of extinction, thanks in large part to rising pollution levels and the construction of numerous dams along the Yangtze River it calls home. Only 100 specimens are thought to remain in the wild, and for the first year on record, none reproduced naturally in the river in 2013. Without additional conservation efforts, there is little hope for the future of this ancient creature.

Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil seems to be on the rise again. Between July 2012 and July 2013, deforestation there was up 29 percent to nearly 2,315 square miles (6,000 sq km). This was the second straight year of increasing deforestation rates there, reversing several years of decline. Still, these numbers remain lower than 2004, the worst year on record for Brazilian Amazon destruction with almost 11,580 square miles (30,000 sq km) cleared.
